Enable SMB multichannel for full throughput and multi-path protection
SMB multichannel aggregates multiple network connections to maximize available bandwidth with higher transfer speeds – especially ideal for large file and multimedia transfer. Learn more
Multiplied network performance
Bind multiple network connections with a client device and enjoy dramatical increased throughput.
Automatic failover
If one connection fails, application I/O continues with the remaining network. Total bandwidth automatically reverts to full throughput once the failure recovers.
Automatic configuration
With SMB multichannel, available network paths are automatically detected and aggregated. No extra complex configuration is required.
Up to 4 times faster with SMB multichannel
QNAP provides various 2.5GbE and 10GbE-ready NAS with built-in 2.5GbE and 10GbE ports – especially suitable for SMB multichannel to boost applications and maximize your ROI!

What is the difference between SMB multichannel and Port-trunking?
SMB multichannel | Port- trunking | |
---|---|---|
Configuration | Plug & use. Simply connect Ethernet ports from NAS to client device. | NAS requires further settings (May also require a switch that supports port-trunking) |
NAS Operating System | QTS 5.1 | No version limitation |
Bandwidth Aggregation | Yes | Yes |
Transfer Speed Aggregation | Yes | No |
Load Balancing | Yes | Yes |
Fault Tolerance | Yes | Yes |
Scenarios | Increase transfer performance for individual users | Simultaneous data access with multiple members |
Note:
- SMB multichannel only allows for combining the Ethernet ports of the same speed and type on a device. For example, 10GbE+10GbE.
- SMB multichannel uses the same number of Ethernet ports across devices.
- If the NAS and client use different speeds of network ports, the slowest speed will be used. For example, connecting a PC with two 2.5GbE ports to a NAS with two 10GbE ports, the SMB multichannel transfer speed is 5 Gbps.
- Actual performance may vary due to the configuration (CPU, RAM, hard drives, switches, etc.) and hardware performance of the NAS and client device.
- RSS, RDMA, and NIC Teaming are not supported yet.
Supports AES-128-GMAC for SMB signing acceleration
SMB signing (also known as security signatures) is a security mechanism in the SMB protocol. For business applications that demand high-level security, SMB signing helps enhance file sharing security by protecting against interception attacks. However, SMB signing can also negatively impact data transmission performance.
Best performance and protection combination
QTS 5.1 supports AES-128-GMAC signing acceleration (only in Windows Server 2022 and Windows 11 clients) that not only greatly increases data signing efficiency over SMB 3.1.1 but also enhances the CPU utilization of the NAS system - providing the best balance of security and performance.

Secure your NAS account with two-factor authentication (2FA)
It is strongly recommended to use 2FA on all your user accounts, and your NAS is no exception. Apply a two-step log-in process to your NAS accounts now to help prevent unauthorized access to your NAS and to ensure NAS data and network security.
QNAP Authenticator
Install QNAP Authenticator app on your mobile phone, set up 2-Step verification, and log in your NAS securely and conveniently. Learn more
Secure and flexible login authentication
-
2-Step Verification
QNAP Authenticator provides various ways for NAS login, including time-based one-time passwords (that work offline), QR code scanning, login approval, and online verification codes.
-
Passwordless Login
You can even choose to log in without a password. Simply scan a QR code or approve a sign-in request, then enter your NAS system.
Delegated administration to boost management productivity and ensure data security
Administrators group users, who have full authority of the NAS, can delegate 8 types of roles to other users with specified permissions to management tasks and NAS data. For organizations that continue growing, role delegation helps ease management workloads. Learn more
Greater efficiency with delegation
Sharing administrative tasks and responsibilities with other staff not only relieves management burdens but also ensures operational reliability if management staff is absent. Each pre-defined role can only perform specific tasks and access data with limited authority – providing clear responsibilities and data security. Explore delegated roles and privileges
Delegated role | Privileges |
---|---|
System Management | Has the highest administrative capabilities under Administrators. Has privileges of all other delegated roles. Manage system settings in Control Panel. Can access folders/files only after being granted read/write permissions. |
Application Management | Install, update, and manage apps in the App Center. |
Access Management | Manage overall accessibility of the NAS and execute QuFirewall. |
System Monitoring | View NAS system condition and information from Resource Monitor and Dashboard. |
User and Group Management | Create, edit, delete local/domain users and groups. |
Shared Folder Management | Manage shared folders and grant access rights for users or groups. |
Backup Management | Manage and monitor backup jobs of the NAS, including Hybrid Backup Sync and Hyper Data Protector. |
Backup Operation | Execute backup jobs of specified shared folders with permissions. |
Practical business use case - The routine backups
When an organization is growing, data backup requirements from different department becomes increasingly complicated for IT staff to handle. With delegated administration, IT staff can assign members with the Backup Operation role to manage backups of their own department’s folders and files. Every routine backup of each department can then be executed more easily and without requiring IT staff involvement.
Automatic RAID disk replacement with spares before potential failure
If potential drive errors are noticed, QTS 5.1 automatically moves data from the affected disk in a RAID group to a spare disk, before the data on the affected disk is completely corrupted. By removing the need to wait for the system to replace drives (from hours even to weeks) only after a failure occurs, system reliability is greatly improved and removes the need for RAID rebuild.
Preventing RAID rebuild time and risks
When disk failure occurs, the RAID enters degraded mode. Rebuilding a RAID can take a long time - which risks further data loss, and system performance is also affected. QTS 5.1 supports automatic RAID disk replacement, without the need to wait for RAID rebuild.
Various disk drive assessment tool
Numerous HDD/SSD health check tools are included with QTS 5.1, including S.M.A.R.T., Western Digital® Device Analytics (WDDA), IronWolf® Health Management (IHM), DA Drive Analyzer, and SSD estimated remaining life. Once a trigger event occurs, data on a potentially failing drive will automatically move to the spare disk.
Optimized storage management user interface
Storage & Snapshots Manager includes everything you need to quickly identify the disk type and information for each drive bay. Drive health can also be instantly determined through ULINK® DA Drive Analyzer, Seagate® IHM, and WD® DA.
Improved drive health analysis and failure prediction
Powered by a cloud AI engine provided by ULINK, the ULINK DA Drive Analyzer intelligently predicts if one of your drives is near failure - allowing you to plan for replacements and service continuity before drive failure occurs. Regarding delegated administration, the role “System Management” and “System Monitoring” has privileges for using the DA Drive Analyzer. Learn more
